Forty kilometers from Rosario, Argentina, a clearing amid mature eucalyptus trees embraces LA BALLENA. Brigati Polak Arquitectos rejected the idea of letting architecture dominate the site; instead, they let the forest’s layout and atmosphere guide the design. The trees do not just surround the house—they become its frame, infusing every corner with the quiet charm of nature, turning the suburban residence into a space that coexists with the woodland rather than standing apart from it.

For the architects, LA BALLENA is more than a house—it is an "organism" that adapts to life’s changes. They saw the project as a research opportunity, not a mere response to client or jury expectations. This mindset freed them from rigid formulas; the space is designed to evolve with the family’s shifting needs, turning daily life into a dynamic dialogue between people and their surroundings, and hiding reflections on modern living in every detail.

Transparency weaves the interior and exterior into one. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls blur the line between inside and out: when sunlight filters through eucalyptus leaves, it paints dappled patterns on the exposed concrete floors. The living room, bathed in this light, feels less like a closed space and more like a "forest pavilion," where residents can enjoy the woodland view while staying cozy.

Diagonal paths and strategic openings add layers to the spatial experience. Unlike traditional linear layouts, these paths lead residents to discover new views at every turn—sometimes a cluster of eucalyptus, sometimes a corner of the pool. The openings are carefully positioned to capture the forest’s scent and the sound of wind through leaves, turning a simple walk through the house into a sensory journey.

Materiality tells a story of balance between permanence and lightness. Exposed concrete and solid wood form the house’s core, grounding it to the earth and symbolizing lasting stability. In contrast, glass and steel create a sense of lightness, letting the building “breathe” with the forest. This duality—heavy and light, fixed and fluid—gives LA BALLENA both a sense of security and openness.

Sustainability is woven into the house’s DNA. To answer the era’s call for eco-friendliness, the team adopted geothermal energy—using the earth’s crust as a thermodynamic machine to provide heating, cooling, and hot water. Solar panels further supplement energy needs, turning LA BALLENA into a space that not only coexists with nature but also actively protects it, reflecting the architects’ responsibility toward the environment.

LA BALLENA is ultimately a dialogue between life, nature, and time. It is not an isolated architectural piece, but a part of the eucalyptus forest, growing and changing with the family that lives there. Every corner carries the architects’ research and poetic vision, turning daily moments—whether enjoying morning coffee by the window or evening walks under the trees—into meaningful connections with the world around. This is the essence of its design: to make architecture a carrier of life’s beauty.
