Nestled in the lush greenery of Palo Alto, California, a 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival-style house is taking on a new meaning in the art of entertaining. Fergus Garber Architects (FGA) preserved its historic character while infusing it with 21st-century warmth. It serves as both a cozy abode for a single father and his children, and a welcoming home for laughter and friendship. Every detail balances vintage elegance with contemporary practicality.

在加州帕洛阿爾托的濃蔭里，一棟 1920 年代的西班牙殖民復興風格老宅，正以新的姿態訴說著 “宴請之道”。Fergus Garber Architects（FGA）團隊在保留其歷史肌理的同時，為它注入 21 世紀的生活溫度 —— 這里既是單身父親與孩子的溫馨居所，更是承載歡笑與情誼的 “待客之家”，每一處細節都在平衡 “復古優雅” 與 “當代實用”。

The story begins with the owner's dual obsession with classics and a place for gatherings. This busy professional and single father, awed by the timeless beauty of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, yearned for a space where he could comfortably entertain family and friends. Upon encountering this Birge Clark-designed house, he knew it was a place "for both living and entertaining." The FGA team, understanding this desire, immediately prioritized preserving the house's soul. They preserved the original terracotta roof, restored the weathered stucco trim and front door, and even hand-replicated those parts that could not be restored to their original form. As sunlight filtered through the stucco walls, the terracotta tiles shone with a warm reddish-brown hue. While the house's age remained undimmed, it quietly prepared itself for a new life.

故事的起點，是業主對 “經典” 與 “歡聚” 的雙重執念。這位忙碌的專業人士兼單身父親，既敬畏西班牙殖民復興建筑的 timeless 美感，又渴望一個能自在招待親友的空間。當他遇見這棟由 Birge Clark 設計的老宅時，便篤定這是 “可以安放生活與宴請” 的地方。FGA 團隊深諳這份期待，第一步便是守護老宅的靈魂：保留外立面原始的陶土瓦屋頂，修復風化的灰泥飾邊與正門，那些無法復原的部件，也以手工復刻的方式精準匹配原貌 —— 當陽光落在灰泥墻上，陶瓦在光影里泛著溫潤的紅棕調，老宅的歲月感未減分毫，卻悄悄做好了迎接新生活的準備。

Passing through the beautifully restored main entrance, the interior's dialogue between old and new becomes even more captivating. The second floor, originally designed to accommodate only three bedrooms and two bathrooms, has been redesigned to accommodate four bedrooms and four bathrooms, each exuding a sense of comfort without being overcrowded. Newly added light fixtures feature vintage metal textures but are equipped with modern lighting control systems. The walls are painted in a soft beige hue, echoing the warm undertones of Spanish architecture while adding a sense of brightness and airiness. The owner was deeply involved in every design decision, from the texture of the doorknobs to the overall color scheme, reflecting his pursuit of unforced elegance. As a friend quipped, "If Brunello Cucinelli were a house, this would be it": no ostentatious ornamentation, only understated quality, even the air exudes a "relaxing luxury."

穿過修復如初的正門，室內的 “新舊對話” 愈發動人。二樓原本僅能容納 3 臥 2 衛的布局，被重新規劃為 4 臥 4 衛，每一間都透著 “不擁擠的舒適”。新添置的燈具帶著復古的金屬肌理，卻搭載著現代控光系統；墻面的涂料是柔和的米色調，既呼應西班牙建筑的溫暖底色，又讓空間顯得明亮通透。業主全程參與設計決策，小到門把手的紋路、大到整體色彩搭配，都融入他對 “優雅不刻意” 的追求 —— 正如朋友調侃的 “若 Brunello Cucinelli 是一棟房子，便是這般模樣”：沒有浮夸的裝飾，只有低調的質感，連空氣里都透著 “讓人放松的奢華”。

The most captivating aspect is the "gathering space" that extends beyond the house. FGA added two wings: one boasts a master bedroom suite with its own bathroom, providing a private retreat for the residents; the other, a large, connected living room and open kitchen, creating a central hub for entertaining. The kitchen island is spacious enough for groups to gather around, allowing mothers to chat and prepare meals while children play on the living room rug, ensuring a constant visual connection. French doors off the living room open to the loggia, a covered outdoor porch with a fireplace built into the wall. In winter, a fire burns, allowing families and friends to gather here for meals while gazing out over the sparkling fountain and pool. In warmer weather, a path leads to the lawn, where a bocce court, a sunbathing pavilion, and a pool house (ADU) unfold. With people splashing by the pool, others laughing on the bocce court, and children running across the lawn, the old house's grounds have never been more lively, yet always maintaining a sense of tranquility.

最令人心動的，是房子背后延伸出的 “歡聚場域”。FGA 在此新增了兩翼空間：一側是帶獨立衛浴的主臥套房，為業主留出私密休憩區；另一側則是打通的大客廳與開放式廚房，成了宴請的核心。廚房的中島臺足夠多人圍坐，媽媽們聊天備餐時，孩子們能在客廳的地毯上玩耍，視線始終相連。從客廳旁的法式門走出，便是露天門廊（loggia），壁爐嵌在墻面里，冬日里燃起火焰，親友圍坐在此用餐，抬頭能看見庭院里的噴泉與泳池波光粼粼；天氣暖和時，沿著小徑走到草坪，地擲球場、日光浴涼亭與泳池屋（ADU）依次展開 —— 有人在泳池邊嬉戲，有人在地擲球場上歡笑，孩子們追著風跑過草坪，老宅的庭院從未如此熱鬧，卻又始終保持著 “不喧囂的愜意”。

Even the smallest details reveal thoughtful considerations for hospitality. The outdoor porch is paved with non-slip tiles, ensuring both aesthetics and safety. The poolside lounge area features hidden storage for towels and toys. The interior lighting features a warm yellow hue, gently enveloping guests in the evening light, dispelling the sense of distance that can arise from a refined space. The owner loves autumn weekends: he bakes pizza in the kitchen, friends chat by the porch fireplace, the children chase each other around the pool, and the wind blows through the branches of the old oak tree, carrying the fragrance of terracotta and plants. In these moments, the historic feel of the house blends seamlessly with the spirit of contemporary living, redefining the meaning of "home": not just a place to live, but a place to share time with those who matter most.

即便是細節處，也藏著對 “待客” 的貼心考量。戶外門廊的地面鋪著防滑瓷磚，兼顧美觀與安全；泳池邊的休憩區配有隱藏式儲物柜，能收納浴巾與玩具；室內的裝飾燈選了暖黃色調，傍晚亮起時，光線溫柔地裹著每一位客人，消解了 “精致空間” 可能帶來的距離感。業主最愛的，是秋日的周末：他在廚房烤著披薩，朋友們在門廊的壁爐旁聊天，孩子與伙伴們在泳池邊追逐，風穿過老橡樹的枝葉，帶著陶瓦與草木的香氣 —— 這一刻，老宅的歷史感與當代的生活氣息完美交融，“家” 的意義被重新定義：不僅是居住的容器，更是 “與重要的人共享時光” 的載體。

Today, this historic home, nicknamed "Home For Hosting," has transcended the definition of "house." It's a place where the owner spends time with his children: father and son share breakfast in the kitchen on weekend mornings; it's a place for friendship: laughter spills from the porch into the courtyard at birthday parties; and it's a tribute to classic architecture: a place that, through the passage of time, has always maintained an attitude of acceptance and inclusiveness. The FGA team's design demonstrates that historic homes don't have to be trapped in the past. When historical textures meet contemporary needs, they can blossom with a vitality that's both nostalgic and vibrant. Here, every banquet is a continuation of a story, and every daily routine a heartwarming tribute.
