Interpreting the healing narrative of materials and light through an artistic perspective, PH202 Apartment, with travertine as its bones and the coast as its soul, integrates the concept of "architecture and healing" into every detail amid the hustle and bustle of Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula, making the home a touchable and perceptible "container of time."

When Finnis Architecture and Interiors was commissioned to design PH202, their core brief went beyond simply renovating an apartment. The client desired a home that would coexist with the coast, grow with time, and soothe the fatigues of daily life. Eschewing ostentatious ornamentation, the designers drew upon the architectural texture of Park Vue II, conceiving the entire apartment as a "sculpted piece of travertine." The exterior facade is a solid travertine volume, while precisely carved window frames allow light and views to flow in. From the interior, views of the coastal promenade and bay are framed in a dynamic "coastal scroll," transforming the morning mist, afternoon shimmer, and evening sunset into a changing scene each day. This "stone-based" design not only echoes the natural texture of the Mornington Peninsula, but also implicitly embodies the living philosophy of "strength and tenderness coexisting" - the rough texture of the travertine is a response to the coastal wind and waves, while its delicate texture hides a gentle embrace of life.

The narrative of the space lies in the "breathing of materials" and the "rhythm of light and shadow." Entering the apartment, the central hallway serves as a "prologue to transition": the walls continue the texture of travertine, while light diffused from indirect overhead lighting creates a soft sheen on the stone. Footsteps on the desaturated solid wood flooring elicit no crisp reverberation, only a steady tactile sensation. This "compressed" feeling allows the mind and body to gradually withdraw from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. Turning down the hallway, the open-plan living room opens up—a travertine-topped coffee table, custom light wood cabinets, and an off-white fabric sofa create a balance of cool and warm in the space. Most captivating is the curved wall design, whose lines are inspired by the curves of coastal waves and shells, free of sharp angles and angles, only smooth transitions. Sunlight filters through the floor-to-ceiling windows onto the curved wall, and light and shadow flow gently over time, as if "collecting" the coastal wind and waves within. The designers' consideration of lighting also conceals a "healing" element: task lights meet practical needs such as reading and cooking, while ambient lighting strips automatically adjust their brightness over time – refreshing cool white light in the morning to awaken vitality; soft warm yellow light in the afternoon for relaxation; and a low-saturation night light mode at night to minimize sleep disturbance. This "biologically driven" lighting design transforms a home into more than just a living space; it becomes an invisible steward for safeguarding health.

The design of the functional spaces closely interweaves coastal memories with daily needs. The kitchen's travertine countertops seamlessly blend with the walls, their natural texture reminiscent of the tides. While preparing meals, caressing the stone with your fingertips feels as if you can feel the warmth of the sea. The dining room's pendant lights, composed of minimalist metal lines, hang above the solid wood dining table. In the evening, the light filters through the lampshade onto the table, blending with the sunset glow outside. As the family gathers for a meal, the sea breeze filters in through the half-open window, bringing a subtle salty aroma, imbuing every bite with the flavors of the coast. The bedroom is a tranquil haven: the headboard wall is upholstered, feeling as soft as fine beach sand. The light gray bedding visually echoes the ocean view. Lying in bed, you can see the distant lights of the bay and drift off to sleep to the faint sound of waves. The closet storage system is concealed behind travertine-textured doors, ensuring a tidy and cohesive space. Even the bathroom design is ingenious: the washbasin with a travertine countertop and the shower room with frosted glass allow light to filter in through the glass, making the space appear transparent and private. Washing up here in the morning, looking through the window at the rising sun shining on the sea, a good mood for the day begins with this "coastal morning light".

The design of PH202 Apartment is essentially a profound fusion of the designer's understanding of coastal living and the owner's desire for a healing home. The Finnis team sees themselves not as "creators" but as "translators of nature and life." They observe the texture of the Mornington Peninsula's coastline: the texture of the travertine, the curvature of the waves, the play of light and shadow. They then dissect these natural elements into materials, lines, and lighting, weaving them together with a modern design language. Here, every piece of travertine, every curve, and every ray of light is not an isolated decoration, but a carrier of the owner's emotions: the travertine reminds them of the reefs at the seaside, the curved walls evoke memories of the waves, and even the shifting of light allows them to experience the flow of day and night along the coast.

The most captivating aspect of this apartment isn't its immediate sophistication, but its quality of "growth over time"—the travertine stone acquires a warmer luster with age, the solid wood floors bear the marks of life, and even the ocean view changes with the seasons. PH202 isn't a "frozen work" but a "growing home." With stone as its foundation, light as its rhythm, and the coast as its soul, it offers residents, amidst the bustle of Melbourne, both the poetic beauty of "facing the sea" and the gentle touch of "peaceful years."
